In selecting a subject for a brief address upon the opening of the fifty-fourth session of the Epidemiological Society, I have naturally turned to the field which comes more directly under my own observation in connection with factory and workshop industries. Recognising the impossibility of any adequate review of industrial epidemics and endemics in the short time at my disposal, I propose to speak mainly of a few of the broader issues, and in particular of the gaps in our present knowledge., The conditions of indoor industrial life are in many respects favourable for the precise study of incidence of disease.
